Face Fit Testing
A face fit test is a procedure that ensures the Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) you use fits correctly and provides effective protection against hazards identified in your workplace risk assessment.
Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), it is a legal requirement that anyone using tight-fitting RPE must be face fit tested by a competent person.
Description
Why Take Face Fit Testing?
Our Qualitative Face Fit Test (QLFT) is a pass-or-fail assessment designed to confirm that your RPE provides a proper seal and is fit for purpose.
By undertaking face fit testing, you ensure you are properly protected against inhaling hazardous airborne substances. Exposure to materials such as asbestos can result in serious work-related illnesses and, in some cases, fatal health conditions.
Legislation requires that anyone who wears a tight-fitting mask as part of their role must undergo face fit testing. Compliance with regulations such as:
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
- Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002
- makes face fit testing essential for both legal compliance and personal safety.
You may also require re-testing if:
- Your mask has experienced wear and tear
- You have changed mask type or model
- You have lost or gained weight
- Your facial features have changed
Regular testing ensures ongoing protection against hazardous materials.
What Does the Test Involve?
The process involves one of two recognised testing methods:
- Qualitative testing (QLFT) – A pass-or-fail test based on the wearer’s sensory detection of a test agent
- Quantitative testing – A measured assessment using specialised equipment to evaluate mask seal performance
Both methods include a series of prescribed exercises designed to simulate normal working movements and confirm that the mask maintains an effective seal against the wearer’s face.
